- One (2-pound; 900g) head cauliflower, cored and cut into medium florets (1 1/2 pounds or 680g after prep)
- 3 tablespoons (45ml) extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Finely grated zest of 1 lemon (optional)
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Canola oil or other neutral oil, for frying
- 1 large red onion, halved and thinly sliced into half moons
