- 1 small shallot, finely minced
- 5 cups water
- 2 stalks fresh lemongrass, chopped and broken up
- 1 28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp. tomato paste
- 1 tsp. dried red chili flakes
- 2 tbsp. fish sauce
- fresh ground black pepper, to taste
- optional garnishes: creme fraiche or sour cream, edamame, cilantro, crispy won ton strips, wasabi peas, bean sprouts
