- 3 cups of water (or more if needed)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 large carrots, finely chopped
- ½ red or green pepper, finely chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 8 ounce can tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1½ tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- ½ tablespoon of hot sauce (or more to taste)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- freshly ground black pepper
- 8 hamburger buns
