Ingredients
  • Soup:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 medium tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped (or 1/2 cup canned chopped tomatoes)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons chile powder, preferably New Mexican
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds, crushed
  • 2 1/2 quarts chicken broth
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, sliced
  • 4 carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 1 russet potato, peeled and sliced
  • 1 turnip, peeled and diced
  • 1 chayote, peeled and diced
  • Salt to taste
  • Meatballs:
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 pound ground sirloin
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 onion, minced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • Pepper to taste
